    Metals AM Design for Manufacturing

    Get PDF
We are looking to improve upon the current post processing techniques for metal additive manufacturing (AM). This project, sponsored by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), will investigate ways to improve the design of stainless steel 316 parts made by AM, and how these designs will help with post processing techniques. We hope that the findings regarding stainless steel will apply to to improve the AM and post processing handshake in general. In particular, the project will focus on including different features in different basic part design shapes to aid in fixturing and post-processing of the part made by AM. This will largely focus on including features for kinematic mounting that can be used to fixture the part in a machine for post processing or for inspection. Kinematic mounts will be added to parts that are to be milled and extension will be added to parts processed by the mill. This type of mounting can improve the accuracy of the part orientation in the machines as well as making positioning of the part more easily repeatable. Various ways of incorporating these mounts into the part design will be tested with post-processing to determine the most beneficial configuration. The information gathered will be used to create a design guide for LLNL to use with their AM processes when determining which type of mounting system would be the most useful in each situation

Improving the FAIRness of Australia’s grains research sector data

Across Australia’s arable landscapes, thousands of crop trials have been conducted to improve the profitability and sustainability of Australian grain production. Although there have been significant steps to make knowledge gained from trials available to users, there is the potential to further support the development of next generation data models and knowledge products by integrating trials from disparatei sources by adhering to FAIR principles of data management. That is, making data: findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. This research explores whether Online Farm Trials increase the FAIRness of agricultural grains trial datasets through a comparison of the trial data capture and handling practices of organisations whose datasets are not discoverable through Online Farm Trials (OFT) (N = 50) with the FAIRness of the datasets discoverable through OFT. The findings demonstrate that OFT is helping to make the results of Australia’s grains trials more FAIR to the users of trial data, and suggests a number of improvements to the FAIRness of trial datasets, foremost through the use of machine-readable metadata

Ben Daya, I., Noguchi, M., Callaghan, J. P., & Wong, A. (2016). Automated Histological Analysis System for Quantifying Microstructural Damage Accumulation to the Annulus Fibrosus. Journal of Computational Vision and Imaging Systems, 2(1). Retrieved from http://openjournals.uwaterloo.ca/index.php/vsl/article/view/100In this paper, we proposed an automated histological analysis system for quantifying microstructural damage accumulation to the annulus fibrosus. This system takes in a digital histology image and uses Gaussian mixture model based segmentation, followed by connected components analysis to extract and label possible clefts. The image is then refined through spatial and size constraints. Finally, the required statistics for quantifying microstructural damage are calculated. This research was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canada Research Chairs Program, and the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation

NASA GIBS and Worldview: Visualizing NASA's Earth Science Data for All to Explore

    Get PDF
For more than 20 years, the NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) has operated dozens of remote sensing satellites collecting nearly 15 Petabytes of data that span thousands of science parameters. Within these observations are keys the Earth Scientists have used to unlock many discoveries that we now understand about our planet. Also contained within these observations are a myriad of opportunities for learning and education. The challenge is making them accessible to educators and students in intuitive and simple ways so that effort can be spent on lesson enrichment and not overcoming technical hurdles. The NASA Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) system and NASA Worldview interactive mapping site provide a unique view into EOS data through daily full resolution visualizations of hundreds of Earth science parameters. For many of these parameters, visualizations are available within hours of acquisition from the satellite. For others, visualizations are available for the entire mission of the satellite. Accompanying the visualizations are visual aids such as color legends, place names, and orbit tracks. By using these visualizations, educators and students can observe natural phenomena that enrich a scientific education. This presentation will provide an overview of the visualizations available in NASA GIBS and Worldview and how they are accessed. Specific attention will be given to the newer capabilities and accomplishments, including: Support for geostationary sub-daily visualizations, Enhanced support for vector-based visualizations, Improved Worldview tour and snapshot capabilities, New imagery products across a growing set of scientific areas

A biomimetic pancreatic cancer on-chip reveals endothelial ablation via ALK7 signaling

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive, lethal malignancy that invades adjacent vasculatures and spreads to distant sites before clinical detection. Although invasion into the peripancreatic vasculature is one of the hallmarks of PDAC, paradoxically, PDAC tumors also exhibit hypovascularity. How PDAC tumors become hypovascular is poorly understood. We describe an organotypic PDAC-on-a-chip culture model that emulates vascular invasion and tumor-blood vessel interactions to better understand PDAC-vascular interactions. The model features a 3D matrix containing juxtaposed PDAC and perfusable endothelial lumens. PDAC cells invaded through intervening matrix, into vessel lumen, and ablated the endothelial cells, leaving behind tumor-filled luminal structures. Endothelial ablation was also observed in in vivo PDAC models. We also identified the activin-ALK7 pathway as a mediator of endothelial ablation by PDAC. This tumor-on-a-chip model provides an important in vitro platform for investigating the process of PDAC-driven endothelial ablation and may provide a mechanism for tumor hypovascularity.R01 EB000262 - NIBIB NIH HHS; TL1 TR001410 - NCATS NIH HHS; UC4 DK104196 - NIDDK NIH HHS; UH3 EB017103 - NIBIB NIH HHSPublished versio

    Model Block Press Design

This project’s goal is to redesign the Center for Vocational Building Technology (CVBT) BP9 earth block press, which makes 1/3 scale compressed earth blocks to build demonstration model homes in Thailand. The full-scale block press, the BP6, provides a sustainable and affordable technique for constructing habitable homes in Thailand. The BP9 serves as a tool to inform the public of the advantages of human-powered earth block presses through demonstration. The BP9 press design has multiple problems: it is too expensive to manufacture, there is too much friction when used, it has several weak points due to users unintentionally applying excessive force, and it cannot make channel or half blocks. Some experienced block press users were interviewed to gather opinions on what improvements and/or changes should be implemented in the new block press design. The main takeaway was that the press’s structural supports should be reinforced or redesigned. This document also includes some other existing full-scale press designs. The main objectives for this project are to eliminate the weak points and to reduce the cost. A full redesign with an entirely different mechanism was decided upon, and this process is detailed in the document, as well as the details of the design itself. The manufacturing and design verification plan, as well as the timeline of this project, are also detailed in the document
